Help for self-help PDF Print E-mail

We are convinced: Education is the only effective weapon against poverty
With our „project Ndijani“ we would like to support the people of Zanzibar through...
  • the fulfillment of basic needs
  • the construction of a primary and professional school
  • improving social and economic structures
  • incentives to independent thinking and acting

to enable them to receive an education, which should later lead them to financial independence. We provide self for self-help; however, the inhabitants of Zanzibar also need your support in order to combat poverty.

Our Project in Zanzibar

Our first projects were started in Ndijani, a village situated in the middle of the rainforest of central Zanzibar. The most urgent requests are at this time for the protection against illnesses. We are providing people with mosquito nets to protect them against infectious mosquito bites. Malaria is communicated to humans by means of the Anopheles mosquito and can be lethal if not treated.

Another important need is to improve hygene, as a number of village people have died of cholera and typhoid as a result of polluted drinking water. The construction of a well and showers as well as opening a walk-in clinic should improve the situation.

These projects as well as the construction of a school with living accommodation and a playground for children have already been discussed with the local population and construction by a local architect is in the planning.

About Zanzibar

This is Zanzibar from our point of view:

This is Zanzibar from the point of view of many of its inhabitants...

Why did we start our projects here?

We decided to start this project because in Zanzibar…

  • there is a shortage of clean drinking water and electricity and illnesses such as malaria, cholera and typhoid are widespread.
  • due to the lack of medicine and hygiene, child mortality rates are very high.
  • the life expectancy is 45 years on average.
  • 80 % of local inhabitants live on less than one US Dollar per day.
  • unemployment rates are extremely high, because locals generally don’t speak English as fluently as mainland Tanzanians and lose many job opportunities to the latter.
  • kindergardens and preschools are practically nonexistent.

Interesting facts about Zanzibar: History, culture, language, religion

Zanzibar, also known as the Spice Island of the Indian Ocean, is located about 35km off the East coast of Africa, about 6 degrees south of the equator and belongs to Tanzania.

The Zanzibar archipelago consists of the main island Unguja, the sister island Pemba, as well as many small islands. The total population, including the inhabitants of Pemba, amounts to about 1 million people: a colorful mixture of Africans, Arabs, Persians and Indians. The immigrant ethnic groups mixed with the Africans, created a new culture which became known as "Swahili" (from the Arabic word "sahil" = "Coast"), and even developed a language of their own, which today is important all throughout East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania).

The history of Zanzibar is characterized by its fame in the trade of spices (mainly cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and pepper), ivory and slaves. Still today, many clove-trees can be found, which have been growing there since 1818. Zanzibar reached its peak in 1850, when the group of islands was the world's largest producer of cloves, and unfortunately also the largest slave-trading center of East Africa.
